My thoughts on AI for copywriting

“Should I be using AI for copywriting?”

“Why would I pay for a copywriter when I can use AI?”

“What do you think of AI and its copywriting abilities?”

These are just some of the questions I’m frequently asked at networking events, so I thought it was about time that I put everything down into a blog. After all, in recent years, the rise of artificial intelligence and the likes of ChatGPT have transformed many industries and copywriting is one of them. However, while it might bring with it a whole host of benefits, there are also several limitations to be aware of.

The benefits of AI in copywriting

Hang on, a professional copywriter who believes AI can be beneficial for copywriting(!!??) Yes. Hear me out. For starters, AI is great for research. These tools can quickly gather and analyse huge amounts of data and provide insights for your content. While you do need to fact-check everything that comes from AI (more on that later), this can speed up the overall process.

As well as this, AI can be a great partner in your brainstorming sessions. Writer’s block is a real thing, but AI can provide you with a range of suggestions based on your own ideas. Not only will this mean you can overcome any roadblocks, but it may inspire fresh perspectives.

The limitations of AI in copywriting

Unfortunately, for me, that's where the benefits of AI copywriting end. Plus, I must also point out that I don’t use AI when creating any client content - unless they specifically ask me to. This is because, I believe that AI-produced content simply lacks human touch. There is rarely any emotional depth to it and it’s hard for any machine to replicate the creativity and skills that a professional writer brings.

Then, there’s the fact that AI content has been proven to be inaccurate at times. Not to mention, it can misinterpret the context of your topic. Without careful checking and editing, errors could pass through which could be damaging for your business.

Finally, we’re still at the start of AI and the future of its implications in copywriting is relatively unknown. We just can’t say what will happen to AI-generated content in the future and how much this might impact a website’s ranking and a business’ credibility. Therefore, I would approach any AI copywriting with great caution.

So, what’s the answer?

As mentioned, unless a client has specifically asked me to use AI to speed up research times, I think it’s best to steer clear of these tools in copywriting. However, if you do want to use it, make sure you do so as a complementary tool rather than a replacement. So, feel free to use AI for research and ideas but rely on human creativity to add personality and depth to your content. And, if you need any help with the latter, I’m only a message away.
